My favorite games have always been monster collecting RPGs. When everyone thinks of the genre, they usually only think of Pokémon , the king daddy of the bunch. The problem with that is there are still dozens of other titles that fit under that umbrella, many of which just get swept under the rug. My goal in life is to inform the masses about these games that you may never play.
Yokai Watch 2 : Getting Americans to accept that Yokai Watch 2 is an amazing game is a difficult task. In the states, it’s marketed as a kiddy show built to sell toys with an odd game add-on targeted squarely at snot-nosed brats. When you give it a chance, you will uncover an incredibly complex world, filled with real-time battles that challenge your merit and ability to trace lines under pressure. Yokai Watch 2: Psychic Spectres was one of the sleeper hits of 2017, a game that was eclipsed by Sun and Moon . If you like weird humor and fighting with monsters with butts for faces and sweaty haunted armpits, I highly recommend trying this out.
Digimon Cyber Sleuth: Digimon is my favorite franchise of all time. I’ve spent hundreds of hours inside Digimon World 2 for the original PlayStation, battling my mons against bad guy mons. When Cyber Sleuth was announced as a Japanese exclusive, I borrowed a PS Vita, bought the game and played through the whole thing. It didn’t matter that I couldn’t read any of the dialogue or understand the plot—fighting turn-based battles with my childhood icons was worth the hassle. Two months after I beat the thing, the game was released in English and I still played it again.
Digimon Cyber Sleuth - Hacker’s Memory: If I liked the original, I loved the sequel. I’ve spent every waking hour playing this game, already clocking in over 10 hours in just a few days. The addition of team battles and a whole new story make this game a must-play for anyone who loved the original. There’s also a Wormmon sidekick and that should be enough to attract any old school digital monster fan boy.
Monster Hunter Worlds: I’m on the bandwagon, punching dragons in the face.
