A new feature from Birthdays the Beginning has been outlined by Toybox Inc, less than a month before the curious new sandbox game heads to PC and PS4. The studio also published half a dozen new Birthdays the Beginning screenshots from the game’s Challenge mode, which tasks players with accomplishing an assortment of tasks with limited time.
The new images will be appreciated by some. But the big win this week is Toybox’s explanation of the Birthdays the Beginning ’s Glass Jar function. The studio says players can use the jar to store a single organism, plant or animal, which can then be released further down the timeline. The idea is that players will use new world conditions to further evolve the captured organism. Toybox says the Glass Jar will also play a role in Challenge mode. Usage won’t be necessary, at least not for all of the challenges, but knowing when/how to use the jar efficiently will be helpful when those tasks get tougher.
Personally, I’m just hoping for other peripheral uses, like releasing a large predator to trigger an evolutionary adaptation in its potential prey. I’m also really curious to see what happens if you release a tyrannosaurus rex into the same environment as a grizzly bear. The outcome seems obvious. But what if Birthdays throws a curveball and grizzlies start growing to similar sizes? Who wouldn’t want a world full of dinosaurs and dino-sized bears?
