The bestselling game of 2015. Can you guess? Could it be the highly acclaimed Fallout 4, or the massive Star Wars Battlefront that released a month before the box office record-holding Star Wars: The Force Awakens? Of course not. According to the latest study from NPD Group, Call of Duty: Black Ops III enabled the CoD franchise to claim No.1 selling game in North America for the seventh consecutive year.
"Each year, we are reminded of the passion of the Call of Duty community," wrote Activision Communications Manager Scott Lowe on the Activision blog. "From the excitement we saw at reveal to the massive turnout for the multiplayer beta and at launch in November—2015 was an incredible year for Call of Duty: Black Ops III and the team at Treyarch."
Lowe also added that "Black Ops III was just the beginning." Activision is preparing to unleash a new DLC in February titled Black Ops Awakening for the PlayStation 4. The add-on will include four new multiplayer maps (Gauntlet, Splash, Rise, and Skyjacked) as well as a new chapter to the Zombies saga featuring a map known as Der Eisendrache.
With the latest wild reception of Call of Duty: Black Ops III, the franchise has garnered a total life-to-date sales figure exceeding 250 million copies. In 2015, NPD Group's list via EnGadget shows Black Ops III beat the likes of Madden NFL 16, Fallout 4, Star Wars Battlefront, Grand Theft Auto V, NBA 2k16, Minecraft, FIFA 16, Mortal Kombat X, and finally Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, which was the bestselling game of 2014.
