The PlayStation 4 announcement trailer for Boundless hit the web on Friday, nearly two weeks after a PS4 port was confirmed at PlayStation Experience 2016, and it’s looking like there might still be hope for an interstellar competitor to the Minecraft throne. We just have to hope Boundless is able to live up to its lofty ambitions.
Of course, while Boundless may be new to the console community, the game has actually been public knowledge for more than two years. The project was originally announced as Oort Online, a sandbox game from former Lionhead Studios and Electronic Arts employees, before being renamed Boundless in late 2015. Wonderstruck’s goal is to deliver a single-server, massively-multiplayer sandbox game that lets players explore a gigantic universe, encounter a variety of creatures and build the sort of sprawling creations we’ve come to expect from the sandbox genre.
This week’s trailer acts as an overview, of sorts, offering viewers a first-person tour of the features currently available in Boundless. Players get a brief look at several worlds built specifically for the PSX 2016 demo; worlds that may be opened up to the game’s Early Access community in the near future. Wonderstruck Director James Austin also published an update on the PlayStation Blog, outlining features currently in the game and laying out the studio’s plans for the future of Boundless. Plans which include a player-driven economy, including player-run shops that are stocked entirely with goods recovered by members of the Boundless community.

Boundless is in development for PlayStation 4 and PC. The game is currently available in Steam Early Access and expected to hit PS4 in 2017.
