Bungie released an official statement giving players an update regarding its upcoming first-person shooter. The studio revealed that there is a playtest scheduled in 2025.

The update came in the form of a nearly 10-minute video that was uploaded to the game's official YouTube channel. Game director Joe Ziegler talked to fans about the work that they have been doing on Marathon since the last update.

Bungie Gives Update on Marathon

Ziegler discussed the direction of Marathon as well as told fans about their plans for the future of the game, including updates. The footage did not include any new looks at the first-person shooter but it did show off some concept art for some of its heroes.

The game director talked about Marathon being an extraction shooter and also discussed what an extraction shooter is. This was particularly useful for people who did not know exactly what the term meant, according to Insider Gaming.

He also set some time to talk about taking elements from the original Marathon and expanding them for a new title in order to attract a modern audience.

Ziegler noted that these include a lot of mystery and a kind of eeriness. He also said that they took some psychological bits.

Ziegler added that they also introduced some elements that they believe would help modernize the game. There is also a new story and new world that players can expect to experience that will be updated over time.

No Gameplay Footage

The game director's talk about Marathon comes a year after the game was originally announced. The video also gave fans a peek at two character classes in the game. The update also felt like proof-of-life footage for the upcoming first-person shooter, Polygon said.

Bungie said last year that there were plans to go dark with Marathon so that they could focus on working on the game. They committed to showing off some gameplay the next time they gave an update on the title.

While Ziegler acknowledged that promise, he noted that they were not yet ready to show any in-game footage to fans. He talked about how intense Marathon would be as players have to fight over loot and try to survive and escape with the stuff that they got.

He said that Marathon's world is based on Bungie's classic 1990 sci-fi trilogy that was recently re-released on Steam. The two character classes that were teased in the update were Thief and Stealth, according to Kotaku.
