Activision's new Call of Duty Warzone Battle Royale has hit over six million players in the first 24 hours of the game's release. Call of Duty Warzone is a stand-alone Battle Royale that is completely free to download and jump into. The Battle Royale launched a few days ago and it hit over six million players overnight, according to Activision.
Popular industry analyst Daniel Ahmad also retweeted the original Activision tweet, highlighting that Apex Legends could only manage to achieve 2.5 million players in the first 24 hours and Fortnite could only hit a million players in its initial hours.
Indeed, six million players is quite the big number and most of it comes from Call of Duty's sustained player base. What's more important than these initial numbers are whether or not Call of Duty Warzone can manage to sustain all the new players. It has been noted that players quickly lose interest from BR type games.
Call of Duty Warzone is currently available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One with cross-play support. The game isn't small, and comes in at a beefy 80GB+ for those who don't own Modern Warfare. However, if you already own Modern Warfare, you'll be only downloading 20GB of data.
At Call of Duty Warzone's launch, Activision Blizzard Chief Executive Officer Bobby Kotick said in a press statement that "Call of Duty remains one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time...With Warzone we are allowing players across the world to experience the fun of Call of Duty for free.”
“Warzone is more than a new era for Call of Duty, it’s a game-changer for players and fans. We’re delivering two incredible modes of play within this massive world that take the experience to a new level," Executive Vice President and General Manager Byron Beede said in the statement. "The teams at Infinity Ward and Raven Software have created an amazing, free-to-play experience that’s accessible to all to jump in right away and have a blast. There’s a ton of content plans and live events to come that will continue to keep fans guessing and ready to experience new thrills.”
