The Church in the Darkness is a game where you infiltrate a ‘70s cult that has squirreled itself into the South American rainforest to hide from… well, you. Watch the trailer for The Church in the Darkness below:
The Church in the Darkness stars the legendary voice talent of Ellen McLain (GlaDOS from Portal ) and John Patrick Lowrie (The Sniper from Team Fortress 2 ) as cult leaders Rebecca and Isaac Walker. Their cult, the Collective Justice Mission, has escaped to the South American jungle to build Freedom Town. Why are you infiltrating their little set-up? To check up on your nephew, of course.
The top-down view and open map allow you several options: kill everyone (always an option), don’t kill everyone (cunningly work your way around guards), and generally skulk around. Gameplay and narrative change every time you play, meaning that an evil power-hungry cult one play-through could become the sincere effort of principled people in the next.
The game’s story is communicated to players via the Walkers’ PA announcements. You also encounter documents and letters around town indicating what’s really going on beneath the surface. The role of the intense Walkers was written specifically for Lowrie and McLain, who are also helping to compose the soundtrack.
“Every playthrough of The Church in the Darkness offers a unique version of Freedom Town with different character personalities and a shifting narrative told through investigation, observation, and action,” states the announcement for The Church in the Darkness . “How dangerous are the Walkers? Who are your allies and enemies? How far will you go to uncover the truth and save these people?”
The Church in the Darkness comes to PC/Mac, PS4 and Xbox One in early 2017. More information is available at the developer’s website here .
