A new page on the Civilization website and a new video on YouTube has the basic gameplay details for longtime Civ standby Egypt, led by Cleopatra in the upcoming Civilization 6.
Check out the video below for a quick first look at some of Egypt’s new gameplay mechanics:
The Civilization site describes Egypt’s new unique unit, the Maryannu Chariot Archer, as follows:
“The Maryannu Chariot Archer is a hereditary class of nobles riding in light chariots. This style of chariot offered a stable base for archers and more room for ammunition, but had its limitations when it came to terrain. Horses and chariots posed maintenance complications, especially during longer campaigns, but the Maryannu were ultimately one of the more elite units in the pharaoh’s army.”
The Maryannu chariot archers get bonus movement when they start on flat terrain and are best at fast attacks early in the game, with high mobility enabling them to respond to wide-ranged threats.
Egypt’s unique tile improvement is the Sphinx:
“The Egyptian sphinx is a mythical creature comprised of a human’s head atop a lion’s body. The sphinx was a common theme for pharaohs obsessed with strength, eternity and wisdom, and ranged in size from small to great – the latter of which is seen in the oldest known monumental sculpture existing today: the “Great Sphinx” of Giza .”
Sphinxes provide faith and culture, with an additional provide bonus when built next to a Wonder.
Egypt’s special ability, known as “Iteru,” reduces the construction period for building districts and other structures next to rivers. Flood plains will also not block the placement of districts and wonders. Wonders will be completed faster when built on rivers, mirroring the importance of the Nile River in Egypt’s development. Egypt is considered a Wonder-focused civ.
As a leader, Cleopatra’s special ability provides a boost to Egypt’s trade routes, which gives Egypt additional gold. When other civs make a trade route to Egypt, the originator will receive a bonus to food that helps grow their population. Egypt will get additional gold as well. This makes Egypt a powerful trading partner and ally, especially in the early game when growth is paramount.
Other civs confirmed in Civilization 6 include America, led by Theodore Roosevelt, and England, led by Queen Victoria. What civ do you hope we get the details on next? Let us know in the comments section below.
