The Civilization 6 team has shared gameplay details for Spain , led by Philip II. King of the Spanish Empire for 48 years, he was the most powerful ruler in Europe during the 16th century. Check out the video below for more details on the Spanish in Civ 6 :
Historically, Philip was a staunch Catholic who utilized the Spanish Inquisition to silence his enemies, organized a “Holy League” against the Ottoman Empire, opposed Protestantism in England and directly financed the Catholic League during the French Wars of Religion. As Defender of the Faith, Philip’s special ability is El Escorial, named after the majestic El Escorial monastery and palace built in 1595. Philip’s units get a combat bonus against players following other religions. His inquisitors can also remove heresy one additional time.
Spain’s special ability is Treasure Fleet, where traders between continents get extra yields. Spain can also combine ships into fleets earlier than other civs to maximize the benefits derived from venturing onto other continents.
Spain gets the Conquistador Unique Unit. Conquistadors get a significant bonus when there is a Spanish missionary, inquisitor, or apostle on their hex. If a Conquistador is adjacent to a city when it is captured, that city automatically converts to Spain’s majority religion, further spreading Spain’s cultural grip.
The Mission is Spain’s Unique Improvement. This faith building provides bonus faith when built on a different continent from the Capital and gives Science if built next to a Campus. Gotta love those District adjacency bonuses!
Spain’s religious strengths give it a leg up when it comes to controlling others and pushing lesser faiths out of the way. Its bonuses to intercontinental activity provide a strong incentive to found or take cities around the world. How will you play Spain - as a bastion of culture and religion, a trading empire bar none, or an intercontinental menace to world peace?
