Fox took to the stage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas to confirm Deadpool 2 is on the way. Ryan Reynolds, director Tim Miller, and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are all returning to make the sequel.
It was a given Fox was going to order Deadpool 2 , but prior to today nothing was officially confirmed. While it's way too early for plot details, we can certainly speculate on the Deadpool 2 cast.
Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who will pen the Deadpool 2 script, recently spoke to CinemaBlend about what mutants to expect in the sequel. Obviously, Cable is going to co-star and you can bet ‘lucky’ Domino will also star alongside her telekinetic lover, Nathan Summers. However, we could see some more diverse mutant powers in Deadpool 2, according to Reese.
“I do think that’s fair to say you’re going to get some more fun powers, and we don’t like to... I guess the best way to say it is that we like to see diverse mutant powers. So, I don’t think you’ll see like five strong characters, you know, super strong characters in the sequel. I think you’re going to see people with a diverse range of powers,” he said.
Could this mean mutants like Magik, Juggernaut or Copycat could join the cast?
Mutant action was about the only thing missing from Deadpool. Aside from Negasonic Teenage Warhead, there are few scenes where mutant powers take over. We get to see Deadpool’s hand regenerate, but miss out on Colossus’ transformation into steel. Domino and Cable would definitely spice up the Deadpool sequel in the mutant arena.
It was previously reported that Wolverine, Taskmaster, Garrison Kane, Sluggo and Wire were written into the initial Deadpool drafts, but were cut. In an interview with i09 , Reese also revealed Angel Dust was originally supposed to be three different characters -- Garrison Kane, Sluggo and Wire -- but after a budget cut, the writers had to slash precious action scenes and remove their characters. According to IndieWire , Reese and Wernick specifically said the three villains will not be resurrected for the sequel. “You probably won’t [see them in the sequel], but maybe in future go-rounds,” Reese said.
However, due to Deadpool ’s huge success, the writers may have access to more X-Men characters aside from Colossus, a character who did not directly conflict with Bryan Singer’s vision for X-Men.
“I think we’ve established ourselves as a franchise now....So I think we’ll be able to sneak into the garage and pull out the Ferrari every once in awhile and take it for a spin,” Wernick told IndieWire. So it sounds like Deadpool 2 won’t fully intrude into X-Men, but the writers may have more leeway with secondary characters whose origins are easier to manipulate and deserve a chance in the spotlight.
Of course, fans are hoping the 'Ferrari' could be Wolverine. A recent interview with CinemaBlend does give a glimpse of hope that Wolverine could appear in Deadpool 2.
"What I would say is we've broken all the rules, so there are no rules that we're unafraid to break, and so, you never know. We would love to be able to have Wolverine go head to head with Deadpool, but we also have to keep in mind that there is this larger X-strategy in place," Wernick said.
With X-Men: Apocalypse set for May 27, and the third Wolverine film one year away, anything can happen. Taking into account the writers seem to be straying away from Kingberg's staple X-Men members, it's hard to say who that 'Ferarri' will be.
Magik, Colossus’ sister, would be a smart pick to introduce to the big screen. Her ability to teleport would fit the writer's wishes for characters with more traditional superpowers. Possibly Juggernaut, a friend of Colossus and mutant who boasts the ability to create a mystical force fields? A metamorphic (and X-Force member), like Copycat, would also be an exciting addition.
If Deadpool, Cable, and Domino are all set play major roles in Deadpool 2 , could the sequel be a setup for X-Force? Marvel has two open slots, so it’s likely Deadpool 2 will get either a Oct. 2017 or Jan. 2018 release date. What characters do you think would fit well in the Deadpool sequel?
