The oft-rumored (and long-awaited) sequel to Destiny is making all sorts of headlines this week, thanks to a combination of official news and ambitious rumors. Activision still isn’t saying much about Destiny 2, not even the real title for Bungie’s next shared-world shooter, but the publisher has at least confirmed the Destiny sequel will emerge before the end of the year.
Activision addressed the untitled Destiny sequel during its latest quarterly earnings call on Thursday, and the bit that has fans excited was also included in a slideshow prepared for Activision shareholders. According to the publisher, Destiny 2 (the name we’ll continue to use as a stand-in until the project gets a real name) will get a “full sequel” in 2017, with “follow-on content plans” that Activision believes will better position the franchise for continued growth. Kotaku’s Jason Schreier also published a report claiming three studios, including Vicarious Visions, are assisting Bungie with development of the Destiny sequel. Schreier also continues to stand by early reports that Destiny 2 is headed to PC.
Admittedly, the news isn’t nearly as exciting as the rumor that grabbed hold of the Destiny subreddit’s attention on Thursday morning. Rumors about an alleged Destiny sequel, “Destiny II: Forge of Hope,” which focused on a prolonged military engagement between the Tower and the Cabal have since been shot down by Bungie Marketing Director Eric Osborne. But we don’t blame anyone for getting excited about what could’ve been the first concrete details we’ve seen on the Destiny sequel. Even if an Earth-based war against the Cabal sounds like one of the least interesting stories Bungie could shove out the door.

Destiny: Rise of Iron is currently available on PS4 and Xbox One. The yet-to-be-named Destiny sequel is expected to debut before the end of 2017.
