Destiny fans around the globe have joined together to raise more than one million dollars for charity this week, and that total is still growing. And that’s just the preamble to this year’s GuardianCon , the annual celebration of all things Destiny, before it begins on Friday.
GuardianCon is a fan-run convention founded by several popular Destiny streamers, including Professor Broman and King Gothalion. The event began as Destiny Community Con before switching to a much catchier name in 2016. Every year, some of the top names in the community organize a marathon Destiny broadcast to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Last year, Destiny players raised more than half a million dollars during the GuardianCon marathon, an impressive total by just about any metric. But Destiny fans weren’t content. And that desire to do more brought a massive influx of support for this year’s marathon.
As of Thursday afternoon, GuardianCon Marathon 2017 raised more than one million dollars for St. Jude’s Research Hospital. And there are still several hours to go before this year’s marathon comes to a close. The feat is made all the more impressive by the lack of ongoing support for Bungie’s shared-world shooter. Last year’s GuardianCon took place during the build-up to Rise of Iron and there was still plenty for fans to see and do before the last batch of Destiny DLC hit PSN and Xbox Live. But this year’s marathon takes place during the final countdown to Destiny 2, months after the last Destiny patch was published. But that didn’t stop GuardianCon or the Destiny community from delivering its most successful charity drive to date.

Destiny: Rise of Iron is currently available on PS4, Xbox One and PC. The upcoming sequel, Destiny 2, heads to consoles on Sept. 6 before making the jump to PC in October.
