'Diablo 3' Anniversary Patch Trailer Explains Upcoming Celebration Of Franchise's Beginnings

A new trailer for the Diablo 3 Anniversary Patch, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of the first Diablo , offers the D3 community another rundown of the inspirations behind (and new features in) the big update coming to Blizzard’s dungeon-crawler later this month. But those who’ve been closely following news surrounding this month’s “Darkening of Tristram” event won’t find much new information about Diablo 3 patch 2.4.3 in Blizzard’s new video.

For those who may have missed the news, Blizzard plans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first Diablo by attempting to recreate the game inside the latest entry in the series. 16 new levels will hit Diablo 3 this month, accessed by taking part in a global event involving cultists still loyal to Adria the Witch. After completing a short quest chain, players will gain access to the new levels, which make use of a new visual filter that looks to recreate the grainy textures of the first Diablo. Some of the game’s boss battles have been retooled, including the Butcher, and Blizzard says the community can look forward to discovering other easter eggs throughout the new levels. Both players and NPCs alike even have to use the old eight-direction movement style employed by dungeon crawlers and RPGs of its era.
