Dota 2 team Evil Geniuses may have been eliminated from the Arlington Major, but they’ll be heading home with a smile. That’s because they’re getting a direct invite for The International 2022. Meanwhile, Outsiders is still in the tournament but has also obtained a direct invite.
We reported yesterday that being eliminated from the Arlington Major meant that EG might have to go through the qualifiers. In addition, EG was one of the four teams vying for the last two direct invites for TI. What exactly happened?
We mentioned that we would get a clearer picture once we know the results of the match between Fnatic and Beastcoast. In that match, Fnatic won the first game; yet Beastcoast won the next two games and rewarded them with a victory, moving them to the next round of the playoffs.
The Would-Have-Been Scenario
Since Fnatic lost, the DPC Rankings show that both EG and Outsiders stay in their current placements. It would have been different if Fnatic won. Had that happened, Fnatic would be the one with a direct invite.
The last spot would be between EG and Outsiders and this is where it gets even more interesting. If Outsiders wins its next match, it gets the last direct invite; otherwise, it would go to EG. Now, which team do you think would be going against Outsiders? It would have been against Fnatic.
But again, since Fnatic lost, there's no need for this scenario.
The Teams
With all the direct invites handed out, the first 12 teams joining this year’s TI are:
- PSG.LGD
- OG
- Team Spirit
- Beastcoast
- Thunder Awaken
- BOOM Esports
- Team Aster
- TSM
- Tundra Esports
- Gaimin Gladiators
- Evil Geniuses
- Outsiders
For teams that didn’t get a direct invite, there’s no need to worry since there are still the qualifiers. While no details have been revealed about the format, Valve has confirmed that this year’s The International will have 30 teams. So, 18 teams still have a chance to join the biggest Dota 2 event this year.
Hopefully, we get to know more once the Arlington Major ends.
TI 2022
This year, The International will be held in Singapore. The group stage is from October 15 to October 18. Of the 30 teams joining, only 20 are moving forward to the playoffs. The playoffs are scheduled from October 20 to October 23. Then, the Finals are spread across two days from October 29 to October 30.
