You aren’t alone if you didn’t know Dota 2 speedrunning was a thing before today. I’ve spent more than 1160 hours (and counting) of my life playing the game, and I’d never heard so much as a peep about Dota 2 speedrunners before this morning. I’m still having trouble figuring out how this goes any farther than Roshan takedowns, if we’re being honest.
But it turns out there really are entire communities of speedrunners dedicated to Valve’s beloved MOBA. SpeedRun.com tracks more than half a dozen feats, from fastest 1v0 Victory (about 7 minutes) to the fastest 1v0 Hand Of Midas purchase while farming exclusively from the jungle. And one group managed to eke past the record for the fastest Team Roshan Kill over the weekend, taking down the powerful neutral creep in less than 40 seconds. Even the game clock, which typically doesn’t align with real-world time, didn’t reach the minute mark.
The feat was accomplished by a group of five players, including Twitch streamers Mekarazium and Bomj_Kolyadun, and technically falls short of the old record ( 30s and 350ms ). But older versions of Dota remain inaccessible to fans, forcing SpeedRun to start new leaderboards any time substantial changes are made to the game (as was the case with Update 7.00 ). That said, the new record (32s and 450ms) is far better than most Dota 2 players could ever achieve.
To see the world record Team Roshan Kill for yourself, take a minute to watch the archive from Mekarazium’s Twitch channel (embedded below). Then head down to the comments and let us know what other Dota 2 speedrunning records you’d like to see tracked in the future.
Dota 2 is currently available on PC, Mac and Steam OS.
