The first Dragon Quest Builders didn’t take the gaming community by storm, despite glowing reviews, but there certainly seemed to be enough consumer interest to guarantee a sequel. Square Enix has yet to announce any plans for a DQB successor, but it sounds like top members of the dev team are aware that many fans are hoping to see a Dragon Quest Builders 2 announcement in the near future.

We were big fans of Dragon Quest Builders when the Minecraft -inspired sandbox game hit PS4 and PS Vita back in October, calling it the “best argument for sandbox gaming” to emerge in the last few years. And we weren’t alone in our adoration, making it a bit surprising when Square Enix didn’t capitalize on that excitement with a sequel announcement, as the publisher had with Dragon Quest Heroes 2. Thankfully, while there’s still no word on a sequel to Dragon Quest Builders , some of the folks behind the first game have at least confirmed Square Enix is aware of the current demand for such a project.

After collecting a pair of trophies at the 2016 PlayStation Awards, Dragon Quest Builders director Kazuya Niinou and producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto took part in a post-show interview transcribed by GamesTalk and translated by Gematsu. During the interview, the two were asked if Square Enix had any plans for a sequel to Dragon Quest Builders . Neither could confirm such a project; however, Fujimoto acknowledged the community’s appetite for another game.

“We really heard a lot from the fans, such as good points, things they want improved, and we really heard a lot of ‘we want you to make a sequel,’” Fujimoto said. “As part of the Dragon Quest series, I want to live up to the fans’ expectations.”

Niinou also declined to confirm a sequel, noting that he couldn’t make such an announcement “unless Fujimoto-san says it.” But the producer did seem to acknowledge his own desire to make another game, telling Dragon Quest Builders supporters that he believed Square Enix had a responsibility to “return the favor with a good game.”

Dragon Quest Builders is currently available on PS4 and PS Vita.
