Publisher and developer Square Enix have unveiled new details on the story and gameplay of Dragon Quest Treasures, the new spin-off Dragon Quest title coming to Nintendo Switch. Dragon Quest Treasures follows the journey of two protagonists, Erik and Mia, as they make their way across the lands of Draconia in search of the ultimate treasures: the seven Dragonstones. If you think that sounds a bit like Dragon Ball, you’re not alone; that said, you can decide more for yourself by checking out a teaser trailer for the game below.
Dragon Quest Treasures tells the story of Erik and his sister Mia, two siblings living on a Viking longship while always dreaming of amazing treasure during an exciting adventure. On a fateful night, they encounter a pair of otherworldly creatures called Porcus and Purrsula. These creatures took the siblings away into a mysterious land called Draconia, where Erik and Mia have the chance to fulfill their wishes – an opportunity to discover treasure in an exotic land full of monsters and other dangers.
Dragon Quest Treasures lets you play as either Erik or Mia at any given time, and whoever you play is entirely up to you. What’s more, Square Enix also confirmed that progress and character development are shared between the siblings, meaning that you can freely decide who to pick without worrying of losing progress.
The gameplay in Dragon Quest Treasures is mainly focused on hunting for treasure, as the name implies. This is done with the siblings’ partners, their tamed monsters. Along their journey, Erik and Mia can tame monsters to join their quest, with series’ favorites like the Slime and Dracky lending their aid in battles, explorations, and of course, treasure hunting.
On their journey, Erik and Mia will occasionally encounter formidable rival gangs. These enemies are always on the hunt for the siblings’ treasure, so players should watch out. Once you’ve managed to find these treasures and defend them successfully, they can then be taken to your base and have them appraised.
Dragon Quest Treasures is coming to Nintendo Switch on December 9. No other platforms are announced yet, although going by other Dragon Quest spin-off titles, it seems reasonable to expect this on other consoles and PC sometime in the future.
