Publisher/Developer Frontier Developments (Planet Coaster, Planet Zoo, Jurassic World Evolution) has just announced another major expansion for their open-universe space sim title Elite Dangerous. Titled Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, it is set to overhaul the game completely, adding new features such as on-foot gameplay. The expansion is set to arrive in early 2021 for all platforms.
In a press release, CEO David Braben said that “Odyssey is our most ambitious Elite Dangerous expansion to date,” He went on to add that “Extending coverage to the super-fine scale that is needed for on-foot gameplay while maintaining the vast raw distances measured in light years, is a huge achievement by the team, and greatly extends the already rich Elite Dangerous experience. We hope you will join us to continue this journey of discovery and adventure when Elite Dangerous: Odyssey launches in early 2021.”
The Bottom line is Elite Dangerous will have a number of features that should completely change the dynamics of its game such as on-foot gameplay and combat, plus the ability to explore different planets and actually land and wander around on their surfaces. Elite Dangerous is one of those games that does little to hold new players’ hands and show them what to do. It’s pretty much a “set your own goal” type of title and this expansion will improve more on the vastness of what players can do on their own terms.
One can’t help but compare that slow but steady Elite Dangerous and how it is catching up to what Roberts Space Industries promised in Star Citizen. Whether this will be enough to attract a larger (and much more faithful and zealous) fanbase than that of Star Citizen’s, only time can tell.
For those out of the loop, Elite Dangerous is an open-universe space simulator that is set in the 34th century. Based on the Milky Way Galaxy, Frontier Developments has strived to create an imagined future filled with interstellar rivalries and galactic superpowers. Players have the ability (and freedom) to do whatever they want in the vastness of space, whether it’s to hunt, explore, mine, or fight.
Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is set to launch in 2021 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
