We finally have a release date and platform support information for Fallout 4 VR, a fully-explorable, VR-ready version of Bethesda’s increasingly-polarizing open world RPG. There is going to be plenty of disappointment in the community, since only one virtual reality headset is currently supported, but the good news is that the wait for Fallout 4 VR ends Dec. 12.
It’s been months since we’ve had any reason to talk about Fallout 4 VR. The last time we got to see the project , back at QuakeCon 2016, the project was still early enough in its life Bethesda only felt comfortable showing off a few waves of enemies at a Red Rocket gas station. But it seems the studio has made major strides over the last twelve months because QuakeCon 2017 Eve brought word that Fallout 4 VR will debut before the end of 2017.
The bad news is that platform support is going to be very limited at launch. The absence of Xbox support isn’t a shock, given the console’s lack of VR support, but we’re a bit more surprised Fallout 4 VR won’t hit PlayStation VR. Sony’s first foray into virtual reality wasn’t a runaway success but it is one of the most popular VR headsets on the market. It’s possible Bethesda wasn’t willing to compromise on the room-scale experience though.
The good news is that we’re only a few months away from the Fallout 4 VR release date, just in time for the winter holidays. You’ll need a HTC Vive to run the game, along with a fair amount of open space to get the full experience, and there’s no word on whether we can expect Oculus support down the road. But the most immersive virtual reality project to date is less than four months away. And that’s good enough for now.
