UPDATE: Obsidian PR manager Mikey Dowling told Kotaku the following regarding Fallout sequel rumors: “We’ve said plenty of times that we’d love to work on a Fallout again if Bethesda wanted us to, we just aren’t at this time. Right now we’re very focused on the Fig campaign to make our first ever sequel in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. Whenever a new Fallout comes around though, whoever is doing it, we all look forward to playing it!”
UPDATE: Obsidian confirmed it is working on Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. You can become a backer and support Obsidian's project here.
Between the brand-new Nintendo Switch hybrid console, Naughty Dog's announcement of a The Last of Us sequel and the anticipation of Rockstar's long-awaited Red Dead Redemption 2, it's difficult to imagine 2017 become any bigger for gaming. But if rumors are true, it might actually do just that. According to a report from Fraghero.com, developer Obsidian could be working on Fallout: New Vegas 2, a sequel to its 2010 hit.
"We’ve had a spectacular track record with this source in the past," Fraghero boasted. "As you may recall we were the first to accurately leak Red Dead Redemption 2 details. Other Websites like Forbes even tried to make fun of us for it. They weren’t laughing very long.
"Rumors of Fallout: New Orleans set the internet abuzz last year, but our source tells us, it will actually be New Vegas 2."
While we're uncertain whether Fraghero's intel is reliable, we do know that Obsidian is working on something. Earlier this month, the game developer shared the following image in a tweet:
"I used to dream that when my god came back, he would forgive us. That's the trouble with dreams. Sooner or later, we all have to wake up."
Despite Fraghero's interesting report, we don't find any evidence of New Vegas hinted in this cryptic tweet. In fact, judging by the wheat and smoking pipe, some fans suggest the tweet confirms past rumors of a Fallout Louisiana.
"It’s a really fun setting and intellectual property to work with, I love doing rules and mechanics stuff and then expanding the setting is a lot of fun," said Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer in an IGN interview back in July 2014. "I like doing stuff on the West coast because we’re close by, and that’s kind of been a tradition for the West coast developers of that stuff. I think going back to the Boneyard, LA, would be pretty cool but another area that I think Nathanial Chapman who used to work at Obsidian, he thought New Orleans would be a really cool setting for a Fallout game and I think that’d be really cool as well."
