Fallout Shelter's new update 1.2 arrived around midnight Thursday bringing with it a number of new features including a mysterious stranger, survival mode, cloud updates and the new character Piper from Fallout 4. Check out all the details of the latest update for the hit iOS and Android mobile game by Bethesda below.
Here are the specific that Bethesda listed as new features of the game.
Fallout Shelter Update 1.2 New Feature #1 - Cloud Save
According to the update notes, “New Vault-Tec network protocols are finally in place.” This makes it possible for users to save their games in the cloud rather than taking up valuable space on your device. It also allows users to play the same game from a variety of different devices. As a avid Apple users with a few iPhones and iPads laying around, it’s nice to have the freedom to play on various devices without having to start a new vault.
Fallout Shelter Update 1.2 New Feature #2 – Mysterious Stranger
Before even reading the notes, some of you may have noticed a “mysterious stranger” in your vault! According to some folks around the Bethesda forums and Reddit, the stranger, sometimes accompanied by music brings with him cap rewards. If you see him in time and tap on him you can get quite a few caps. I’ve see everything from 300 – 2,000 caps reportedly gleaned from the Mysterious stranger.
Fallout Shelter Update 1.2 New Feature #3 – Survival Mode
So this Fallout Shelter update is probably the most interesting to me. To start the “survival mode” you do have to start a new vault. You are then able to decide what mode you want to play in. If you play in survival mode, here are some of the added challenges according to Redditors:
- Resources are used up faster
- Accidents cause more damage
- Dead dwellers can't be resurrected
While the update said that the survival mode brings “more danger” and “more glory” we aren’t sure yet where the glory comes it. We’re investigating it ourselves right now. It does seem that this update may provide the most challenge for those of us who found the previous edition easy to overcome.
Fallout Shelter Update 1.2 New Feature #4 – Piper in iOS
So a new character from Fallout 4 makes an appearance in this update – Piper!
Her stats are as follows in SPECIALs areas.
Strength: 4
Perception: 4
Endurance: 9
Charisma: 6
Intelligence: 7
Agility: 4
Luck: 4
She also comes equipped with "Piper's Outfit" which has the stats: P+2, E+2, A+2, L+2.
Piper comes as a random character from the Wastelands and asks to join you vault so you don’t have to purchase or earn any lunchboxes to get her. Plus soon after getting Piper, players are finding a special 5 lunchbox treat is given to them by the vault as well.
The only unfortunate thing is, the feature appears to only be happening for users on iOS devices like iPhone and iPad. So far no Android users have reported seeing Piper appear in their games.
Fallout Shelter Update 1.2 New Feature #4 – Scavenge Raiders
This update feature probably came directly from user input as it’s certainly something I had hoped would be added. After you’ve taken down the vault raiders it seems fitting to have the ability to scavenge the dead for equipment. Nice move Bethesda!
Fallout Shelter Update 1.2 New Feature #5 – Skip Tutorial
All I can say is Hallelujah! One of the most annoying parts of starting up a new vault after you’ve played a while is dealing with the tutorial mode. This was definitely a wise update on the part of the Fallout Shelter Team. You do have to go through a few minutes of “beginner mode” but then you have the option to turn off the tips.
Fallout Shelter Update 1.2 New Feature #6 – Statistics Page
Data geeks rejoice! There is now a new tab in the Vault Dwellers Survival Guide called “Stats” and it has all the glorious statistics about your vault you could want, including things like average SPECIALs levels, number of females, males, power production per minute and more. I can see these correlating to future daily challenges. It’s another awesome addition for those of us who like to get nerdy about the math of things.
Fallout Shelter Update 1.2 New Feature #7 – Wasteland Explorer Cap
Unfortunately one bad thing the game brought was a weird cap on the number of explorers that are allowed in the Wastelands. Where we used to be able to send out an unlimited amount, now 10 is the maximum number of dwellers who are allowed to explore the Wastelands at once. If you have more than that already out in the Wastelands then you run into a “collection” bug too. I cannot figure out what the logic was in limiting Wasteland explorers but that’s one restriction I hope they remove in the next set of updates.
As we work our way through the new features of the game, we’ll be providing new tips and tricks guides to help you along the way. If you’ve found other updates we missed, please, share them with us in the comments below.
