Hunting

Skills you’ll want to invest in ASAP

  • Hunter Vision
  • Tag Enemies
  • Craft Arrows I-III
  • Mammoth Rider- BEST PERK EVER
  • Owl Attack I & II
  • All Taming Beast Perks

-Light your weapons on fire

This tip is handy when hunting larger animals. For example, you’ll need to keep your distance with bears as one good swipe with their claws will wipe out most of your health. There’s no way to outrun them early on, unless there’s a cliff nearby.

Using the arrows to light the bear on fire will injure the animal, and also cause it to panic and run away from you. As the animal runs away, the fire will spread to anything in its path. It’ll give you time to throw spears at the bear and kill him.

Additionally, if you want to avoid fighting animals at night you can wave an ignited club at them and they’ll run away.

TIP: Takkar can sprint for a few seconds, but runs out of stamina quickly. Unlock Sayla's food receipes to learn how to create foods with sprinting boosts. Great for a quick getaway when you're outnumbered by prey or enemies.

-Hunt at night

Don't be afraid of the dark. Some animals only come out at night, like the Tapir. You can use the cover of darkness to hunt to lay down traps for the fiercer beasts. Traps are a great way to surprise your enemy and stop them in their tracks. You’ll want to lay down traps for bigger beasts like mammoths to keep them from rushing at you.

-Badgers still don't care

Try to kill these animals using your bow and arrows. Whacking them with clubs will eventually kill them, but they do a lot of damage. They’re surprisingly tough and fast. You'll hate them by the end of the game.

-Separate your prey from the pack

It doesn’t matter if it’s a deer, boar or mammoth. It’s easier to kill an animal if it doesn’t have reinforcements. Weaker animals (like dhloes) are easier to draw towards you. You can hide in a bush and throw an arrow at it. It’ll eventually come in your direction and you can take it down.

You’ll need more patience for larger animals. Let’s use mammoths as an example. The best way to take them down is to get on higher ground and let your tamed beast distract them. Use your owl to send a beast with higher strength, like a cave lion or a bear to fight the mammoth. They’ll keep them distracted as you shoot fiery spears and clubs at its head. Try not to use arrows, as they won’t be able to effectively pierce their skins.

Tip: Remember, animals can smell you even if you're hiding in a bush. Don't let them get too close to you.

-Always follow the scent

Whenever you see a yellow trail of smoke in hunter vision, follow it. It will lead you to a rare animal that you might need to craft weapons or huts for your village. There are some “rare” animals you might stumble across more often than others. The rare black dhole is an animal I encountered often in Far Cry Primal. I recommend unlocking the Skinning II perk to get twice the animal fat and hide for your kills.

-Tame the beasts

This goes without saying, but when Takkar says tame the beast do it. Sometimes it’s too late and the animal is already in attack mode. You can’t tame a beast once it’s spotted you, so have the bait ready once Takkar says the magic words. Approach the animal slowly and you’ll be given the option to tame. You tame a kind of animal once and they’ll be by your side forever. Your animals can die, but you don’t have to keep taming beasts to use them.

Beasts with high stealth, like the leopard, make great hunting partners. You can command your beasts to kill an animal using your Owl. You can also unlock a perk that will allow your Owl to attach certain enemies, but I digress.

Gathering

Skills you’ll want to invest in ASAP

  • Show Plants
  • Show Resources
  • Skinning I & II
  • Find Rare Resources

Increasing your population will help you gather resources. There are four reward tiers for saving tribespeople. I can’t stress the importance of resources. You want to upgrade your personal pack quickly to hold more resources and do less hunting and gathering when you want to focus on missions.

Get 20 ppl

  • Receive one bag of weapon resources and food in your Reward Stash a day.

Get 40 ppl

  • Receive two bags of weapon resources and food in your Reward Stash a day.

Get 60 ppl

  • Receive three bags of weapon resources and food in your Reward Stash a day.

After 60 people saved, you’ll earn +2% XP bonus for every 10 tribespeople rescued. So when you encounter a random Wenja event, DO NOT IGNORE IT. They’re really easy missions and are worth the payoff.

Anyway, Sayla will teach you gathering skills one you build her a hut. The only two skills I would invest right away in for gathering art Show Plants and Show Resources. These two skills will reveal plants, wood and stone nearby and save you time.

Some crafting items require specific resources. Most are named after their location. For example, North Clay and North Cedar are located in the northern part of the map. Alder Wood, Slate and Reeds are common resources. You also shouldn’t worry about plants; even the rare plants will pop up in your reward stash once a day.

IMPORTANT: Sayla also teaches you full health food recipes, along with boost recipes and she can get you rare items in your Reward Stash. It’s worth hunting down mammoths to unlock her perks.

Have fun
