Following an eventful month of shooting in Cleveland, the official Fast & Furious YouTube channel finally shares with us that crazy stunt off the top of a parking structure. Yes, THAT stunt (For those that are unaware, check out the link here to experience the stunt, as taken from an amateur camera phone).
Special effects supervisor J.D. Schwalm helps to break down the insane stunt sequence in the latest "This Week In #F8" behind-the-scenes video: "We have seven cars falling from the parking structure and each one of them is aiming at a motorcade here. We have to pull these cars at an exact speed and we're doing that using the wench on the crane. Each car comes out in succession to land on the road. Obviously, there's no one in 'em because they're about to be impaled by three thousand pound long darts."
Second Unit Stunt Coordinator Jack Gill added that there are as many as 35 to 40 cars involved for the pileup in the stunt. Fast 8 star Vin Diesel even called the action "unlike anything you've ever seen." Well, we wouldn't go that far, but destroying a total of 40 cars in one scene alone is certainly next level shit.
The "This Week In #F8" video gives us a look at all the prep work that goes into successfully composing the shot and also reveals that a lime green Lamborghini Murcielago and a bright red Fiat 500 Turbo at the top of the parking complex. However, it's interesting to note that the final action scene that features all the cars falling from the sky do not include the Lambo or the Fiat.
Fast 8 is scheduled to hit theaters on April 14, 2017. Stay tuned as we learn more in the months ahead!
