It’s been a while since we’ve heard any news about Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and that’s not really a big surprise. It’s vaguely the off-season for video game news, and Square Enix has a much more immediate project to be hawking: Final Fantasy XV. That game, the biggest Square Enix project in years , is out on September 30 and needs to do really well. FF7 Remake, on the other hand, is probably still years away, and certainly won’t come out in 2016. But will it show up at E3 in June?
Final Fantasy 7 Remake And The Case Of Conflicting Responsibilities
Square Enix, like every company at E3, is interested in promoting its games and driving sales. That means it has to strike a delicate balance. It wants you to be super excited about its 2016 games, namely Final Fantasy XV and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. But it also wants you to be super excited about Square Enix in general, which means showing off Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which immediately became the most-hyped game from the studio in many years (because of course it did).
It’s in Square Enix’s best interest to excite its fans and non-fans alike as much as possible. Of course, most of the focus is going to be on Final Fantasy XV. After all, Square Enix wants to sell 10 million copies of the game if it can. And Deus Ex will need to get some love as well; the game hasn’t gotten a ton of buzz just yet, but the last game in the series was excellent and well-loved, so there’s a lot of potential for the next iteration of the series.
And lucky you. Those two needs—promoting both FFXV and Deus Ex—dovetail nicely with getting a new Final Fantasy 7 Remake trailer at E3 2016. Because Squeenix knows that everybody wants more FF7, that everybody will watch its E3 presentation and visit its booth hoping for a glance. That’s a great way to increase exposure for FFXV and Deus Ex. But don’t expect anything as concrete as a release date for the first part or a playable version on the floor. That would take away from the other games. But just showing some new gameplay and sharing some details would actively help Square Enix’s marketing for its other games. Besides, the game isn’t actually that far along anyway, so Square Enix may not even have much to show.
So, fingers crossed. We may yet see Final Fantasy 7 Remake at E3.
