What’s it like to be an ordinary person in a world of superheroes? Yes, another live-action superhero show is coming to network television. This time, we can at least give NBC a little credit for thinking outside the box with their newest venture titled Powerless, a 30-minute, single-camera DC Comics series. The show appears to have the same workplace comedy vibe as The Office and Community, and ex- Communit y actor Danny Pudi will co-star alongside Vanessa Hudgens. Instead of the Dunder Mifflin paper company or Greendale Community College, Powerless is set at RetCon Insurance.
In the first comedy series set in the universe of DC Comics, Vanessa Hudgens plays Emily, a spunky young insurance adjuster specializing in regular-people coverage against damage caused by the crime-fighting superheroes. It’s when she stands up to one of these larger-than-life figures (after an epic battle messes with her commute) that she accidentally becomes a cult “hero” in her own right … even if it’s just to her group of lovably quirky co-workers. Now, while she navigates her normal, everyday life against an explosive backdrop, Emily might just discover that being a hero doesn’t always require superpowers.
As for the superheroes that may make appearances in the new series, Crimson Fox was spotted on set a few months back. In one of the official Powerless photos (below), look closely at the bottom left hand corner. It’s unclear who’s behind the costume, but Alan Tudyk ( Firefly ), and Christina Kirk ( A to Z ) also have recurring roles.
Powerless has no official release date yet.
