Five Nights At Freddy’s creator Scott Cawthon has been teasing a sixth game for the past few months , but according to a recent Steam Community post , the project has been canceled. In a lengthy letter to fans, Cawthon pledges to keep working on new games, including ones related to his popular franchise. Here’s the most critical section of Cawthon’s statement:
“For the last month or so I’ve been dropping hints about a new game; and it’s true that I’d been working on one (call it FNaF 6 if you’d like.) But after forcing myself to keep working on it day after day, I realized something- I just don’t want to work on this. With each game's release, I think the expectations get higher and higher for the next, and rightfully so. Each game SHOULD be better than the last! But that pressure starts to mount, and I fear that I've been neglecting other things in my life for the sake of trying to keep up with those mounting expectations.
“So, after giving this a lot of thought; I’ve decided that I’m going to stop working on it. I’m not going to reveal anything else about what the game was, and I’ve asked other people involved to never divulge anything either. It’s just not going to be talked about...
“I hope you can respect and understand my decision. I want to spend more time with my family, and get back to what made me enjoy making games in the first place.”
However, just because this particular Five Nights At Freddy’s project has been shelved, that doesn’t mean the creator has plans to abandon the series. In fact, he mentions the fun he had creating the Foxy Fighters mini-game for FNaF World, which was a huge departure from the series’ roots and a comical nod to please hardcore followers. Something unique with that kind of goal is currently being considered. He muses on the prospect of a VR game too.
Cawthon went on to recap his plans for Freddy Fazbear outside of gaming. The movie being helmed by Blumhouse Productions is reportedly “in amazing hands” with studio producer Jason Blum. Considering the cliffhanger ending to the new Five Nights At Freddy’s: The Twisted Ones novel , a third entry seems like a pretty sure thing as well.
As serious in tone as this message appears, we’re honestly not sure what to make of it. While a quote from any other developer said in this manner would immediately be taken seriously, Cawthon’s history compels us not to jump to conclusions. As a known troll to his passionate fan base, Scott has “canceled” games in the past. Last year he scrapped Five Nights At Freddy’s: Sister Location because the creative process was “too intense.” He released the game hours later.
Five Nights At Freddy’s games are available now on PC and mobile devices.
