The Flash finally returns from midseason break this week, but CW’s token superhero is also scheduled for a guest appearance on CBS. While Supergirl fans are over the moon about next week’s crossover episode, Flash fans are a bit apprehensive. Despite surprisingly high ratings and viewership, a lot of Arrow-Flash fans are extremely disappointed by what they see as an unoriginal, phony adaptation attempt. This leaves Flash followers, including myself, asking, why Supergirl? Other than the fact that CBS and The CW are funded by the same bank account, how the Supergirl and Flash storylines can seamlessly mesh together remains to be seen.
So putting these misgivings aside, how will The Flash and Supergirl meet?
Tonight’s episode of Supergirl, “Manhunter” may give us a few hints, but it’s much more likely the upcoming Flash episode March 22, “Trajectory,” will answer these questions. We already know to expect a new metahuman named Trajectory, also known as Eliza Harmon. In the just-released Season 2 episode 16 teaser, Barry and Team Flash head out to the club for a night of fun when suddenly a bunch of partygoers lose their wallets. Everyone assumes it’s The Flash, including Iris’ new editor, who wants to blast The Flash’s alleged criminal mischief on the front page of the newspaper. In the clip, we also see The Flash inside of the containment cell. Could team Flash have trapped him there to keep him from going after Trajectory, who runs even faster than Barry?
How does Trajectory get her powers? She could be an Earth-2 speedster sent by Zoom to lure Barry. But how could she have gotten to Earth-1 since all the portals are closed? She could have been affected by the particle accelerator explosion on Earth-1, but that seems highly unlikely seeing we don’t meet her until now. Trajectory could have stolen a vile of Caitlin’s Velocity-9 serum. Now that we know Jay isn’t exactly Jay, maybe he gave Trajectory the serum before he was taken by Zoom?
Barry wants to reopen the time portal to investigate what happened to Jay (Barry doesn't know that Jay /Hunter Zolomon is Zoom, kind of). TV Line’s Matt Webb Mitovich reports that in The Flash , Trajectory is as an “exceptionally bright scientist” with a “split personality a la Jekyll and Hyde.” Maybe Trajectory used her some of those science skills to give herself super-speed powers even faster than Barry.
Trajectory was introduced in the comics as Lex Luthor’s speedster. Her powers didn’t come naturally. She was given her speed abilities as part of Luthor’s Everyman Project. This strengthens the Velocity-9 theory even more. Since Trajectory has origin ties to one of DC Comics most notorious super villains, that’s a strong signifier that she could be somehow tied to The Flash’s archenemy, Zoom. It’s also possible that Zoom gave Trajectory her powers.
So it’s seems like a safe bet Trajectory is going to have something to do with how The Flash gets to National City . Maybe in an effort to keep up with Trajectory, The Flash learns to run so fast he can penetrate the timestream? Or, Barry takes the Velocity-9 himself and there’s some unpredicted side effects? It is also possible Barry finds a way to open the portal, follows Trajectory back to Earth-2 and mistakenly ends up in National City. The synopsis for the crossover episode, “World’s Finest,” specifically says Barry, “suddenly appears from an alternate universe,” which suggests this was not planned.
“Trajectory” Synopsis:
THERE IS A NEW SPEEDSTER IN CENTRAL CITY; WILL THE FLASH BE ABLE TO KEEP UP? – Deciding to blow off some steam, Barry (Grant Gustin) and the team head out for a night on the town only to encounter an unexpected speedster who is up to no good. Iris (Candice Patton) is challenged by an assignment from her new boss (guest star Tone Bell), and is surprised when friction turns to flirtation.
According to previous rumors stemming from leaked set photos, The Flash may also be getting a new supervillain. From the looks of the pictures, this new enemy could be Cisco’s brother, Rupture. Like we saw with Reverb, Cisco does not know the full extent of his powers. If Cisco can meet Rupture, supervillain or not, and learn how to develop his powers they could prove to be useful to help Barry get back to Earth-1 when he presumably gets lost in the timestream.
Will we get to see the Hound of Mordeth, Armando Ramon’s alter-ego, in the next episode? Find out Tuesday, March 22 at 8 p.m. on The CW.
