The Flash Season 2 episode 20, “Rupture,” was an emotional rollercoaster for Barry Allen. The stakes have been high ever since Zoom stole The Flash’s speed. Dr. Wells, not surprisingly, came up with an insane plan to recreate the particle accelerator explosion. Did Barry follow through? The Flash Season 2 spoilers ahead!
Let’s get this out of the way: No, Barry is not dead all the way. A promo (above) for the following episode confirms The Flash is still alive. However, it’s not clear at this point what the particle accelerator explosion did to him and he’s definitely not in Central City.
Harrison Wells spent nearly the entire episode persuading Barry that he must get his powers back by any means necessary. It wasn’t until the very last few moments of the episode that Barry made the decision to follow through with Wells’ plan. Barry endured chemical injections, and multiple waves of electric shocks only to vanish into thin air, leaving his Flash suit behind. It appears Barry somehow became one with the speed force. He’s trapped within some sort of limbo-like interdimensional reality.
Iris and Henry Allen went out of their way to convince Barry not to try and get his powers back. They must not be scared of Zoom because there’s no way Central City stands a chance against Hunter Zolomon without The Flash. Iris basically tells Barry she wants to marry him, and Henry isn’t willing to risk his son’s life even if it’s to save the city. Although in Henry’s defense, from the looks of it the whole electrocute Barry thing appears to have gone terribly.
While the side effects of the particle accelerator explosion aren’t looking good for Barry right now, Jesse and Wally may have just been blessed with the speed force. The two teenagers escaped from The Reverse Flash’s secret safe room from Season 1 and are immediately struck with the speed force. This could be how Jesse Quick and Kid Flash become speedsters.
Season 2 Episode 22, “Invincible,” teases Wally West’s superhero transformation even more. The synopsis reveals, “Wally takes to the streets to help The Flash stop metahumans.” How can Wally take down metas without any powers?
It’s been two whole episodes since The Flash lost his speed and now the chances of Barry coming back without consequence is unlikely. One thing is for sure, he’s going to need help to save Central City. Zoom is under the impression Barry is dead, which could work in his favor. Since Cisco was able to open the breach to Earth-2 and locate Zoom, he may be able to find out where Barry is trapped in the multiverse.
Barry will “fight to return to his old life” in Season 2 episode 21, “The Runaway Dinosaur.” Will he have a little help from Jesse Quick or Kid Flash? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
