If you are a huge fan of the Gears of War series – particularly the first three titles – then you certainly know who Cliff Bleszinski is. For the uninitiated, he is known for being the creator and lead designer of the first three titles in the franchise.
After spending 20 years at the company, Bleszinski decided to leave developer Epic Games some time in 2012. Later on, he formed his own studio called Boss Key and went on to launch LawBreakers and the battle royale title Radical Heights. Unfortunately, the studio had to close its doors, with Bleszinski saying he would probably never make another title for a variety of reasons.
Of course, the challenges never stopped him from playing video games. In fact, the Gears of War creator posted a picture of the Gears 5 start screen on Twitter, giving out thanks to the studio head of developer The Coalition, Rod Fergusson.
It holds true that Bleszinski has not been involved in the franchise since Gears of War 3 in 2011. However, he said that he has been keeping up with the never-ending adventures of Marcus Fenix and the gang.
His most interesting follow-up tweet, though, is when he praised Gears 5 for including a female character.
"Not gonna lie, seeing a woman on the cover of a Gears game makes me happy," he said. "I was told for decades 'games with female leads don't sell.'"
Women have already been featured on the cover of Gears way, way before. The only catch, however, is that they were never front and center. Even more so, they were never featured in the franchise when Bleszinski was responsible for helming the series.
It is safe to say that the Gears of War series is slowly moving away from the traditional narrative of having muscle-bound male characters. As a matter of fact, the new game completely centers on cover star Kait instead of just focusing on JD Fenix and his relationship with Marcus.
