The Overwatch League has finally begun and takes Blizzard’s hugely successful shooter into the esports arena. 12 teams will square off over six-months to figure out which city’s collected players deserve the title of best Overwatch team. To allow fans to cheer on their teams and for everyone to make a little bit of extra money on the side, skins for each hero and team in the League can be purchased in-game. For 100 Overwatch League tokens, which cost five dollars, you can buy one of these skins. They won't be available in any loot boxes, which means you can actually decide what you want rather than have to spin the wheel of randomness.
Like any proper drug dealer, Blizzard will offer fans a small taste of these skins for free in order to get them hooked and coming back for their next fix. For just logging into the game, you’ll get 100 tokens, redeemable for any one skin.
On top of that, if you sign up for the League’s newsletter using your Battle.net email, you’ll get another 100 extra tokens for free. Tokens will not show up randomly, a disclaimer on the site says they can come as late as February, and you can unsubscribe whenever you choose. If you play on the console, make sure to link your Battle.net account to your Xbox or PSN account, which you can do here. My Battle.net email address is still from my college, which no longer exists, so I won’t ever have to worry about those spam emails.
Blizzard is desperate to turn the Overwatch League into esport’s next big thing, and they will do anything to get there. A chance for fans to make a connection with a team in the actual game is genius, it gives players a connection to teams outside of their regions. I’ll buy a New York Excelsior Orisa skin later tonight, showing off my esports team fandom. Hopefully, with Twitch’s official streams, fans will be able to unlock more tokens just by watching the games.
