Preorders suck. From the developer’s perspective it makes total sense, particularly if they’re counting on Kickstarter, BackerKit and other crowdfunding methods to make their payroll and get their game to gold. But still, who wants to pay for a game before we know whether it’ll effectively ease our daily suffering working the bullshit job (the technical term) that motivated our escapist cravings in the first place? It’s already a monstrous feedback spiral with a game you know will be worth it!
Right now, as optimistic as we are for the final product, Friday the 13th: The Game exists in that limbo state. The brief beta for F13 revealed a slavish tribute to Jason Voorhees’ slasher series, but with some unpolished gameplay balance. There are a lot of reasons to believe publisher Gun Media will get it right, including radical new fixes like Jason’s new “Stalk” ability, but it may not be enough to make preordering feel safe — because it never does.
But what’s cool about the Jason Voorhees preorder is that (unlike typical preorder bonuses) it’s been decoupled from actually preordering the game. You just need to spend $6 now and if Friday the 13th: The Game slips off your purchase list, $6 is all you’ll have lost.
