Game of Thrones season 6 has been pretty light on the leaks front, and so we’ve been seizing onto what few crumbs we can get. That’s basically been episode titles, and the newest one just leaked: Game of Thrones season 6 episode 5, which will air on May 22, is called “The Door.” That’s according to HBO Asia, via Watchers on the Wall. Well, that’s really an enlightening one, isn’t it? It doesn’t give us a ton to work with—at least not compared to episode four, “Book of the Stranger"—but it’s certainly a mythic enough title.
Game Of Thrones Season 6, Episode 5: Something About Thresholds
Like most areas featuring homes, businesses, castles and other residences, Game of Thrones is replete with doors. There’s the Moon Door in the Eyrie, and the house with the red door in Braavos where Daenerys grew up. There are the weird doors to the House of Black and White where Arya was training, and the gate under the Wall at the Nightfort. All of these have their significance. None are obviously the subject of “The Door.”
Of course, mythically speaking, doors don’t have to be terribly literal. Doors signify thresholds, the moment of transition between two states of being. “The Door” could be about the transition between death and life, warg and man, for a certain Jon Snow. Or it could represent the burgeoning rapprochement between Cersei and Jaime, or the transition from a state of peace to war for the realm. It could be even more figurative than that. As one door closes, another one opens, as they say.
Game of Thrones is cryptic this season. It’s understandable—we no longer have the books as a guide and the big mystery about Jon Snow is still unfolding (and commanding much Internet attention). Even the episode titles have been relatively hard to read into, minus “The Red Woman” and “Book of the Stranger.” Luckily, there’s an easy enough way to find out what door “The Door” refers to. Just wait three weeks and watch it! Until then, speculate away. Do you have any better theories on what door the episode name could refer to?
