Game of Thrones Season 7 will finally bring the ultimate confrontations we’ve been waiting for ever since the series began. Stark and Lannister will clash for one more round of war. At the same time, Daenerys Stormborn will at last return to Westeros, bringing fire and blood. And lastly, the White Walkers will destroy the Wall and invade the Seven Kingdoms, bringing ice and death. And you probably assume Daenerys and Jon Snow together will find a way to defeat them and turn them back. Don’t be so sure. Truth is, at this point the White Walkers probably deserve to win.
Game of Thrones Season 7 Spoilers: I’m With The Night King
What is the lesson of Game of Thrones? Of course there are many, but here’s one of the mostimportant ones: People don’t always do what is in their best interest. They make mistakes and act erratically. Ned Stark did it; Joffrey Baratheon did it; Robb Stark, Cersei, Daenerys, certainly Tyrion—Westeros is not Middle-Earth, a land of difficult and selfless sacrifice for the greater good. Westeros is about selfishness; not doing what is best for you or even what you think is best, but sometimes just doing what you want, like killing your dad when he’s on the toilet.
And you know what a world like that isn’t good at? Coming together as one. Guess what: the Baratheon/Lannister monarchy has been ignoring the increasing threat of the White Walkers and the ever-more-terrible situation the Night’s Watch is in for the entire series so far. Wildlings launched a full-scale invasion of Westeros, and only King Stannis bothered to do anything about it.
You think Lannister, Greyjoy, Stark, Targaryen and bastard Targaryen are going to put aside all their differences because the immortal dead are attacking? Oh, sure, they’ll probably try eventually—after the Wall falls, at the earliest. Jon Snow and Daenerys both have a selfless streak, sure. But even with dragons, it won’t be easy for the pair to forge a united army.
And it may simply be too late. Soon the Dothraki will be devastating Westeros, as will the dragons, as will the Greyjoy fleet and the Unsullied. There’s going to be a devastating three-way war between the Great Houses before the White Walkers pass that Wall. Even one of the dragons may die. By the time the White Walkers attack, the humans may have torn themselves apart so badly that the Night King won’t have such a hard time after all. And wouldn’t that be the most Game of Thrones-ish twist of all—if the White Walkers win?
