There’s a void in musical television dramas now that HBO has cancelled Vinyl, but have no fear. Netflix has saved the day with the imminent arrival of The Get Down, a new series from Baz Luhrmann that depicts the birth of hip-hop in 1970s New York City.
Reception for the first trailer was warm and since its release, the series has been steadily growing anticipation. On Monday, Netflix released a new 30 second teaser for The Get Down, which features Jaden Smith in recurring role. Check it out below:
If that’s your first look at The Get Down, take a look at the three minute announcement trailer that premiered back in January. Here’s a short synopsis, courtesy of Netflix: Summer 1977. New York City is broken down and beaten-up. Armed only with verbal games, improvised dance steps, some markers and spray cans, this rag-tag crew of South Bronx teenagers will make a pact that becomes bigger than all of them and change their lives -- and the world -- forever.
The Get Down stars Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Jimmy Smits (Paper Towns), Shameik Moore (Dope) and, as mentioned, Jaden Smith. Director Baz Luhrmann previously helmed Romeo and Juliet, Moulin Rouge and Australia, and is well known for his visual splendor.
The Get Down arrives on Netflix Aug. 12.
