GoPro announced at the National Association of Broadcasters event in Las Vegas that it is hopping onto the virtual reality bandwagon with the introduction of GoPro VR . The platform will consist of a website and free app (iOS and Android) that allows VR content to be showcased from around the globe.
“GoPro will introduce GoPro VR, a platform to view and share immersive content,” wrote the company in a press release . “The platform allows users to experience the immersive world of 360˚ video and transforms users' screens into a virtual portal, showcasing original content from GoPro and a global community of artists. GoPro VR is available on the web, free mobile app, or experienced on a mobile head-mounted display.”
Additionally, GoPro debuted its new VR camera: the Omni VR camera. It features six synchronized Hero4 cameras that take 8K video, and sets users back $5,000. Last year, GoPro announced the launch of the 16-camera Odyssey that costs $15,000.
GoPro VR went live on Monday at 11 am ET and is available on the web, Apple’s App Store and Google Play. In the beginning, the content on the platform will be from sponsored artists and athletes.
Last month, both Hulu and Pornhub joined the VR game. Hulu launched its virtual reality app, along with the streaming site’s first VR original content. The VR app lets Hulu users watch their shows and movies with a Samsung Gear VR headset. Pornhub teamed up with BaDoinkVR to launch a virtual reality channel that can be viewed on Google Cardboard, Samsung Gear VR and Facebook-owned Oculus Rift.
