We would really appreciate it if the team at Polyphony could give us an update every now and then on the development on the upcoming Gran Turismo Sport, but we've only received extended radio silence so far.
The last telling report was back in March, when French reporter Cyril Drevet of Gameblog shared some insight during a podcast regarding a recent visit to Polyphony and a meeting with Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi. According to Drevet, the team had missed a goal in March and were faced with a "lot of work to be done," which caused him to feel it is unlikely that the game would arrive before the end of the year. Of course, the lack of updates and reports from Polyphony only compound our concern.
However, there has also been news that suggest Gran Turismo Sport is on schedule. Via Sony Europe Vice President Phillipe Cardon during an interview with Challenges.fr, "This will be a better year for the software and a very big year for the hardware. We expect to sell many consoles yet. And then there Uncharted 4: a Thief’s End, the Sony event for this year. This is our biggest release of the year with Gran Turismo and the return of The Last Guardian. And of course, the PlayStation VR arrives.”
Great, Cardon claims Gran Turismo Sport will be a big 2016 title. Now, a second piece of evidence is backing the 2016 release as well. In fact, German gaming site PSinside.de shared a screenshot from playstationfriends.de, via GTPlanet, which indicates that Gran Turismo Sport is slated to be a launch title when PlayStation VR arrives on Oct. 12.
At the end of the day, these reports can only be taken as speculation for now. Expect to learn more when E3 returns to LA in June. Sony will no doubt have a big announcement to make ahead of its highly anticipated PlayStation VR and rumored PS4 'NEO' launch.
