Publisher Nacon and developer Spiders Studio have just announced their upcoming action-adventure Souls-like game titled Steelrising – a reimagining of the era of the French revolution. The game is set to release for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam.
An overview has been provided by the Spiders Studio CEO Jehanne Rousseau. Rousseau explained that in Steelrising, the development studio is deviating from the formula they’ve used in their previous titles and are now focusing on a much more action-oriented approach for this outing. Players will be assuming the role of Aegis in Steelrising, a robot in female form and whose main purpose is to serve as the bodyguard to Queen Marie Antoinette. It is also the player’s responsibility to put an end to the massacres carried out by the robot army of King Louis XV. Seemingly gone mad and crazy, King Louis XVI has started a downward spiral while trying to suppress the French Revolution.
Rousseau also expounds more on what players should come to expect regarding Aegis and how she will work in combat. Basically, being built as a bodyguard already comes with its perks and weapons, but Steelrising will also provide an avenue for players to upgrade her. “With each time you find while exploring, you can choose to make her more powerful, more mobile, and more durable," Rousseau explained. "We have created more than seven weapons, which are actually families of weapons because you can find many more as you progress through the game, and each one has its own unique characteristics.”
These weapons range from light combat to long-range firearms and heavy weapons, which trade slow attacks for huge damage. Finally, the world will be built around both modern and 18th century Paris, with landmarks and monuments such as the Grand Chatelet and the Tour du Temple.
Spiders Studio is most known for its recent open-world RPG title GreedFall. Thematically, there is a similarity in Steelrising and GreedFall in that both utilize periods from the past and recreates them with modern and fantastical atmospheres. Let’s just hope that execution-wise, Steelrising rises above and beyond what GreedFall could have been.
