Amid the GTA Online Festive Surprise over the holidays, GTA 5 fans were stunned to find rumors of an even more surprising DLC-- is Rockstar readying a massive Liberty City expansion? Rumors of Liberty City coming to GTA 5 have surfaced days before Christmas when GTA 5 tipster Funmw2 shared the following tweet:
Prepare yourself to come back to Liberty City.
Next week is what will decide if it's legit or fake.
Can't wait.
— TezFunz (@TezFunz2) December 23, 2015Following the tweet, a series of additional leaks and rumors pointed to a similar sign: that a major expansion will give us Liberty City. In fact, a bunch of alleged screenshots of Liberty City further fueled the rumors, including an image featuring Franklin inside a red car and being chased by two cop cars in what looks like the streets of Liberty City. Additional images also featured a number of cars speeding on an airport runway as well as a man zipping through the streets in a motorcycle. However, it looks like all the screenshots turned out to be fake, doctored images that featured GTA 5 characters and elements in the foreground of a GTA 4 background.
However, it was almost as though Rockstar itself decided to fuel the Liberty City expansion rumors as well after it announced on Rockstar Newswire that people can sign up for a chance to win a customized Liberty City Stories iPad Mini and iPhone 6+.
Ultimately, it looks as though the initial hype surrounding the GTA 5 Liberty City expansions rumors had died. Funmw2 issued the following update on New Year's Eve: "Looks like my source was wrong about this week regarding getting new info about SP DLC I will try to check if he can get more pictures."
Well, this could mean one of two things-- that the source was wrong about new info arriving week, or that the source is completely wrong about there being a Liberty City expansion, period.
Despite the fact that Rockstar is clearly invested in continued updates for GTA 5, despite the fact that Funmw2 is historically one of the most reliable GTA Online tipsters, and despite the fact that a Liberty City expansion means Rockstar is giving its loyal fans exactly what they want, the rumored DLC is too good to be true and would have been a monumental undertaking for the team.
GTA 5 is expected to receive continuous DLC updates for months to come. Who knows, should future updates pave some sort of way to a map expansion, a GTA 5 Liberty City update may arrive after all.
