Rockstar Games is said to be in talks with some of the most popular "Fortnite" and "Roblox" content creators, as well as current "GTA" content creators, regarding how they can include user-generated content (UGC) in "GTA 6."
Recent insider information indicates that discussions are hinting that Rockstar might be seriously working toward personalized player experiences within the game's online mode.
Rockstar's Increasing Focus on UGC
While specifics are yet to be clear, this could indicate a movement toward a "GTA 6" creator economy that enables players to customize and construct personalized content—similar to how games like "Fortnite and Roblox" work.
According to Digiday, while these talks are just starting, Rockstar's enthusiasm for user-generated content is not a new phenomenon. The acquisition of Cfx.re, the crew behind the immensely popular FiveM GTA roleplay mod, was an open indicator that the company was investigating further integration of player-made experiences.
Pete Basgen, global gaming and esports lead at WPP agency Wavemaker, told DigiDay:
"I strongly believe the reason they bought FiveM was to create a metaverse universe of bespoke experiences and potentially a UGC-led creator economy. It will effectively fill a space that serves an adult audience—people who have moved beyond Roblox and Minecraft."
UGC in 'GTA 6:' A Game-Changer for Creators
If Rockstar does adopt user-generated content, it would revolutionize the franchise. JOGO COO Chad Mustard termed it a possible turning point. He believed that this could open up many possibilities for the developers.
With "Grand Theft Auto's" huge following, applying a creator economy would bring enormous engagement and revenue for both players and developers. Whether Rockstar will provide a revenue-sharing model, though, as has been done in Fortnite's Creative Mode or Roblox's developer initiatives, is yet to be seen.
Could This Mean a Quicker "GTA 6" PC Release?
This move towards metaverse-like experiences might also be the reason for recent rumors that "GTA 6" would be released on PC earlier than anticipated.
The head of Corsair Gaming recently posited that a PC release could come much earlier than other Rockstar titles. As PC gaming is the epicenter of modding and user-generated content, releasing the game on this platform earlier might drive maximum interaction with the UGC ecosystem.
UGC Is the Future of Gaming
Rockstar's alleged switch follows a wider industry trend toward accepting user-generated content. Other large developers, such as Studio Wildcard, have already integrated premium mods in "ARK: Survival Ascended", even on console platforms. Overwolf's CurseForge, a partner of Wildcard, has forecast that playtime on UGC content will dramatically grow by the end of the decade, Wccftech reports.
With "GTA 6" already being a top-five most-hyped game of all time, incorporating UGC-driven gameplay could elevate it to new heights. We never know what Rockstar is planning from the get-go to pull off this new strategy.
But what's certain is that if "GTA 6" does integrate UGC, the gaming world may never be the same.
