Adult Swim Games has a large presence at this year’s PAX East, and one of the highlights of the booth is Double Fine’s latest game Headlander. In typical Double Fine fashion, Headlander is both fun and funny.
Players take on the role of the last human head alive. Here’s the thing though – like Futurama, you are only a head in a jar. While you are still able to boost around, and eventually unlock other abilities, you’re limited to landing on robots without heads to move around more traditionally.
Different robot bodies have different abilities, and this results in puzzles for players to tackle. One robot body has a laser blaster for an arm, so this one is needed to clear a room of enemy robots and open certain doors. Another robot is short, and must be used to get through small passages.
There’s also some sections that can only be traversed when you are just floating around as a head as well. These require you to boost around, powered by the jet at the bottom of your head tank.
While the demo I played was short, it’s clear that Headlander could easily expand its mechanics into a solid 10-15 hour game. Couple that with Double Fine’s traditional humor and creative artwork, and we could be looking at a really great game.
In a big move for Adult Swim Games, Headlander will be releasing on PC and PS4 as a downloadable game. No release date has been announced yet, but the game is still on track for a 2016 release.
