Headlander finally has a concrete release date, Double Fine and Adult Swim Games announced this week, and the upcoming action-platformer will apparently join a litany of other indie titles getting last-minute July launches. As an added bonus, the two companies also published a new Headlander story trailer to continue building excitement among the PC and PS4 communities.
Just in case you aren’t familiar, Headlander is a 2.5D action-platformer that casts as the last flesh and blood human in the cosmos. Well, the head of the last human. Turns out you don’t have a body anymore. Just a super-special helmet that makes you just as immortal as the robots you’re fighting and the ability to dock said helmet into the necks of any automaton in the game. The game is set far in the future, after a mysterious AI called Methuselah has enslaved all of mankind, and sees players trying to free the automated remains of humanity.
The idea for Headlander came during one of Double Fine’s semi-regular prototyping periods, dubbed Amnesia Fortnights, and later fleshed out into a full game once Adult Swim Games stepped in to act as publisher. The core gameplay in Headlander will emphasize your ability to swap bodies at will, forcing players to figure out which shell -- each of which has different strengths, weaknesses and abilities -- might be best for each scenario. This week’s trailer also includes introductions to some of the NPCs who will help players take down Methuselah.
