Murloc Paladin has always been one of the weirdest deck archetypes in Hearthstone . Why are the most glorious, self-righteous and noble warriors in all of Azeroth teaming up with a bunch of scaley frog monsters? It all started with Murloc Knight and Anyfin Can Happen and it ramped up from there. Knights Of The Frozen Throne takes the weird factor up a notch by throwing some even creepier ghouls into the mix. There’s no reason for Uther and Tirion to fight alongside a botanist who likes secrets, an inquisitor and a very angry necromancer. The deck was strong in Un’Goro , but now it’s beyond top tier.
If you’ve never played Murloc Paladin, it’s pretty simple. You want to play as many low mana fish-people in the early game, keeping Vilefin Inquisitor, Hydrologist and Righteous Protector in your opening hand. That 1/1 Taunt with Divine Shield is your best friend – he’s the stickiest, lowest cost minion in your arsenal and should be treated with respect. A Righteous Protector can also be good to mulligan, especially if you’re up against Druid or Pirate Warrior. Clearing Frothing Berserkers and Fandral Staghelm should always be a priority as well. You can’t have the enemy getting more resources than you.
My perfect mana curve with Murloc Paladin, where I know it’s going to be really hard to lose this game, is Vilefin Inquistor, Hydrologist or Rockpool Hunter, Righteous Protector or Murloc Warleader into Gentle Megasaur . By turn four, I have three buffed Murlocs and an opponent that will most likely not be able to react. If they don’t drop the concede, I just wait for Bonemare to show up and enjoy hammering them in the face with my 8/10 Murloc with Windfury.
Unlike Control Paladin, you really don’t have any way to heal so you have to protect your health as much as possible. You do this by using the many Taunt, buffs and Deathrattle minions that are willing to die for the cause. Skelemancer is one of the new cards from KOFT that I originally scoffed at. Who would want to pay five mana for a 2/2? As it turns out, every Paladin who runs spells and minions can just give him Taunt. It’s super easy to set this guy up to die, giving you an 8/8 powerhouse that won’t go down easy.
Murloc Paladins want to hit you hard and fast. A good Pally player knows when to trade his Murlocs, when to soak up damage with Taunts and when to drop that Lich King. It’s one of those decks that look really easy to play, but buff the wrong minion or play a Murloc Warleader at the wrong time and you can throw the whole game away.
