Kripp and Polygon just unveiled their two Hearthstone card reveals, which means it’s time for Blizzard to break out the big guns. You though Archbishop Benedictus was crazy, wait until you see the two cards these guys got hooked up.
Glacial Mysteries- Secret Mage is one of my favorite Hearthstone decks, using Mana Bind unironically and actually winning games just made me smile. Still, the wins weren’t meant to last and the deck started to fade into obscurity. Control and Exodia Mage took my baby’s spot and Polygon claims that their card reveal can bring the archetype back from the dead. Glacial Mysteries is an eight-mana Mage Epic spell that puts all Secrets located in your deck into play. In Polygon’s article, they say that Secret Mage could “could end up being similarly dominant” as Secret Paladin, one of the strongest archetypes Hearthstone has ever had and the only deck I was ever able to get Legend with.
This frozen spell will NOT make Secret Mage as good as Secret Paladin. I’ve made some pretty bold claims in my Hearthstone card reviews, but at least they are rooted in reality. Secret Paladin wasn’t amazing because you had a lot of Secrets on the board, it crushed the meta with an amazing curve that culminated in a turn-six of death. Secretkeeper, Shielded Minibot, Coghammer, Piloted Shredder, Sludge Belcher and then Mysterious Challenger was a mana curve that just couldn’t be beat. Putting a bunch of Secrets from your deck onto the board won’t be as impactful, especially when you have to wait for turn eight to do it.
I will give Glacial Mysteries some credit, I see it becoming a major Primordial Glyph buff. For the cost of two Secrets, you can thin your deck out and get some board pressure, which doesn’t sound too bad. You can still only have five Secrets on the field at the same time and most of those will counteract each other. Secrets activate in the order they are played, meaning if you play Potion Of Polymorph and then Mirror Entity , you’ll end up getting a 1/1 sheep. I have no idea how this card is going to work, but I hope it’s not going to end up giving people sheep.
Obsidian Statue- Hearthstone’s biggest streamer, Kripparrian, was bound to get an awesome card to reveal. This black monster has Taunt, Lifesteal and a Deathrattle that destroys a random enemy minion. Priests have to deal with access to pretty bland minions, which is why this guy is so exciting. He’s got heals, damage and a body that blows anything up. For a deck with very situational removal Power Word cards, it’s good to finally get a card that can kill four-mana minions.
Like Glacial Mysteries , I think this minion looks cooler than it actually is. Priests rarely run high-mana minions; Anduin has to conserve his resources to keep his babies alive. Playing this over Primordial Drake , which deals two damage to every minion, doesn’t seem like the smartest idea. Still, if Lifesteal does end up affecting the meta enough to be considered OP, this guy will see play. It also makes playing Free From Amber worthwhile, since it’s a Priest card and will come up more often than other minions.
