Few would argue that Hitman ’s transition from traditional AAA release to episodic series has been anything but a resounding success for Io Interactive and Square Enix. The new content is looked upon more favorably than Hitman: Absolution and some people (including yours truly) believe the latest iteration of Hitman deserves to be in any 2016 Game of the Year discussion.
So why hasn’t Square Enix greenlit a second season of content yet?
If you’re surprised to hear the publisher hasn’t actually confirmed a second season of Hitman yet, you aren’t alone. Back in August, Io Interactive made headlines when it used the series’ official account to confirm plans for two more seasons of content for its latest release. The studio was quick to point out that a second season of content has not been confirmed yet by publisher Square Enix, but many took the tweet as confirmation Agent 47 would get some new missions down the road. Unfortunately, it sounds like Square Enix either isn’t convinced or isn’t ready to start talking about whatever comes next, because Io Interactive still won’t say whether we’ll see any more episodes of Hitman after yesterday’s release of the season one finale.
The latest on the Hitman situation arrives courtesy of Eurogamer, via an interview with Creative Director Christian Elverdam in which the developer says he still can’t confirm Hitman: Season Two . Elverdam acknowledges the success of season one, telling the outlet that the Hitman team isn’t “worried about building a sandbox anymore”. Instead, he says the developers are focused on discovering the “next evolution” of the series. But any firm confirmation of additional content will apparently have to come at a later date.
Hitman is currently available for download on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Hitman: The Complete First Season heads to brick-and-mortar retailers on Jan 31, 2017.
