Microsoft’s HoloLens, the augmented reality headset that makes holograms appear in our world, is now available for anyone to purchase. It was previously only available to developers. The headset does cost a whopping $3,000 though, so maybe we’ll wait before grabbing one for ourselves.
The headset comes with a remote called a Clicker. This enables users to select, scroll, hold and double-click during extended, interactive scenarios. Also included is a carrying case, a microfiber cloth, a charter and a micro-USB cable.
It should be noted that the HoloLens is only shipping to the United States and Canada as of right now. Also, the hardware and apps only support English. You’ll also need a Microsoft account, so if you have an Xbox Live account, Hotmail address, Outlook account or some other Microsoft log-in, you’re good.
The HoloLens website mentions there are hundreds of apps already available for download, including Skype, Microsoft Office apps and even a few games. A HoloLens-exclusive game that comes with the headset, called Young Conker, is a platforming game you play using objects in your house. Another game, called Fragments, has you playing the detective in a high-tech crime game.
That being said, $3,000 is a TON of money for a product that isn’t really even finished being developed. If you are a consumer and interested in picking one up, I’d recommend holding off a bit before Microsoft refines the design and lowers the price.
