After a cryptic post made by Gearbox Publishing on the official Homeworld Facebook page on August 19th, the publisher has finally confirmed the upcoming sequel for the critically acclaimed real-time strategy game. Developed by Blackbird Interactive, Homeworld 3 is coming to the PC. That said, don't hold your breath just yet.
For those who are unfamiliar with the title, Homeworld is a 3D real-time strategy game set in space. Launched in 1999 by Relic Entertainment and Sierra Studios, Homeworld has been considered one of the best games in the strategy genre. The game’s story will be following the events of Homeworld 2, which focuses on the journey of the Kushan people and their quest to discover their true destiny.
Homeworld 3’s development will be handled by Blackbird Interactive which is headed by Rob Cunningham, the original Art Director for Homeworld. The game promises to return to the series’ roots with a gripping continuation of the story, fully 3D combat, and the classic RTS elements that players expect.
Currently, the game is still in the pre-production phase and is gathering funding through videogame crowdfunding site Fig. Donations can start with as little as $1. Gearbox’s logic behind this is because “we want it to be clear that the game is on a solid foundation, funding-wise. We’re partnering with Fig to give back to longtime fans who have sustained Homeworld for 20 years by giving them a chance to invest in Homeworld 3’s success and help us understand the game they’ve been dreaming about”.

Gearbox Publishing also provides an option to invest in shares of Homeworld 3, which start at $500 and is capped at $10 million. Homeworld 3 is currently projected to get a Q4 2022 release.
