What is Leon’s history with The Dark Army and Whiterose? After the big twist in Mr. Robot Season 2 episode 7, Elliot has some explaining to do.
Brooklyn emcee Joey Bada$$, who plays Leon, gave insight into his character during an interview with GQ after he saved Elliot’s life in last week’s episode.
“I'm sure he's done some wild shit. He might honestly just be a spy or an agent. That's what I'm starting to think. He's onto something, man. Wait until you see the last episode—it's like, Wait, what? And he's clearly not afraid to kill. He's definitely done it before. You don't just kill four people like that for the first time.”
Leon, who was also the one giving Elliot adderall in jail, is an affiliate of the Dark Army and at least an acquaintance of Whiterose. Leon killed four men who were about to rape Elliot. Just as he stabs one guy in the ass, he turns to Elliot and says, “You're gonna get a letter on Tuesday. Do what it says. Yo man, when you see Whiterose, make sure you say I did you good. I'll be rooting for you, cuz. Always.”
Aside from finding out what Elliot is in jail for, Season 2 episode 8 should also put some Whiterose (BD Wong) speculation to rest. Also known as a Chinese government official named Zhang, Whiterose leads a double life. Though the Dark Army assisted Fsociety with the Five/Nine hack, it’s clear Whiterose has mysterious ties to E Corp.
What fans have dubbed the ‘ Whiterose alternate reality theory ’predicts Elliot may not be the only one who experiences multiple realities. Whiterose (and even Tyrell, Angela, Ray, Joanna, Leon and Darlene) could all be living in delusions, personally perceived as reality. Delusional people see the world from their mind’s perspective, so as the viewer, we may be watching a blend of illusions from multiple different points of view. A quote from Whiterose plays into this theory.
"Have you ever wondered how the world would look if the 5/9 Hack had never happened?" Zhang asked Agent DiPierro, who is investigating the E Corp hack. "In fact, some believe there are alternate realities playing out that very scenario, with other lives we're leading, and other people that we've become. The contemplation moves me very deeply."
