Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own. Bruce Lee’s teachings were invaluable to his students in martial arts and apparently Apple is keen to follow the kung fu master’s philosophy as well. That said, is it right to say that a headphone jack is useless? Should an iPhone 7 feature a lightning port only in order to be a specific Apple product?

According to an Apple petition with more than 240,000 signatures, the answer is “no.” Irritated Apple users are calling the move a gross disregard to the customers that have invested a lot of money on their 3.5mm hi-fi headphones. What’s more, petitioners are also claiming that this move from a 3.5mm audio jack to a lightning port will also cause a spike in electronic waste that might not get recycled.

“Apple is about to rip off every one of its customers. Again,” stated the petition. “ Not only will this force iPhone users to dole out additional cash to replace their hi-fi headphones, it will singlehandedly create mountains of electronic waste -- that likely won't get recycled . According to the United Nations, up to 90% of the world's electronic waste is illegally traded or dumped each year.”

Rumors suggesting that the upcoming iPhone 7 will omit the headphone jack surfaced since November. According to the reports, Apple is allegedly getting rid of the audio jack in order to create an even thinner design. Instead, the next-generation Apple headphone could either connect via lightning cable or Bluetooth.

Personally, I stand behind the petition 100 percent. The 3.5mm headphone jack supports virtually every wired headphone on the market and it is irrational to abandon an universal port just to shed fractions of a millimeter.
