One of the earliest rumors of the anticipated iPhone 7 is a new lightning cable that would effectively replace the 3.5mm headphone jack. However, a rumor from earlier this week revealed an alleged iPhone 7 component that suggested that the headphone jack is here to stay after all. Now, another new rumor has been reported, suggesting that the iPhone 7 will not feature a Smart Connector either.
The Smart Connector, which was introduced in the iPad Pro, is designed to attach other components to the device, such as a Smart Keyboard. Smart Connector uses for the iPhone 7 were not clear, but speculators predicted smart cases or wireless charging may benefit from the technology. Now, a report via Japanese site Mac Otakara suggests the iPhone 7 will not have a Smart Connector after all.
According to Mac Otakara, Apple initially considered applying the Smart Connector to the iPhone 7 before dropping the idea later on, although the reasoning behind either decision had not been announced. That said, it would make sense to drop the Smart Connector unless other peripherals such as the Apple Watch 2 could benefit from the feature in some way.
There are no shortage of iPhone 7 rumors and we expect to see more speculation surface in the months ahead. For now, iPhone 7 rumors include an even thinner body, lightning port, a dual-camera setup, a touch-sensitive home button and a waterproof construction. Stay tuned as we learn more in the months ahead.
