Last month, Charlie Cox revealed The Defender s begins filming late 2016. Then Jessica Jones Executive Producer Melissa Rosenberg came out and said Season 2 starts production in 2017 . Now Jessica Jones herself, Krysten Ritter, dropped a bomb when she revealed Jessica Jones and The Defenders will film one after another.
"They'll be back-to-back. I don't know if they'll overlap a little bit," Ritter told Digital Spy.
This gives us a better idea of the Marvel-Netflix timeline. It’s a near certainty The Defenders is coming before Jessica Jones Season 2, although it’s still not officially clear. Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos did say earlier this year that The Defenders production schedule is priority over second and third seasons of Jessica Jones and Daredevil, further suggesting The Defenders will indeed come right after Iron Fist.
Ritter also strongly suggested Luke Cage won’t be the only Netflix-Marvel character appearing in JJ Season 2. While she didn't full-out admit this, it also appears we’ll be seeing her in Luke Cage, which isn’t surprising since Luke Cage played a large role in her own origin story.
Now that Kilgrave is out of the picture, Ritter explains Jessica is going to be “emotionally taxed” in Season 2.
"That opens a lot of doors as to who will come out and play. We all live in the same universe, so there are endless possibilities,” Ritter said. “In terms of scheduling I don't know how it will all come out and I can't even tell you if I've filmed Luke Cage .”
Expect to see Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist all teaming up for The Defenders , and Ritter said she’s already begun preparing for the big Avengers-style team unveiling. Neither The Defenders nor Jessica Jones has begun filming, but since Ritter stars in both series, she’s going to have her hands full at the start of 2017.
"It's about to be a serious undertaking. I'm starting my physical training - lots of weight training and boxing."
No word on Daredevil Season 3, but we have more than enough to look forward to with Luke Cage premiering September and Iron Fist following closely behind.
